Functional Testing

What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation?

A Functional Capacity Evaluation is an objective measure of a person's physical tolerances.  Depending on the information required testing can accomplish many things.  It can determine job specific tolerances and/or full functional ability.

At Pearlgate Physiotherapy our testing protocols are based on the Matheson System of Functional Testing.  This method of performing functional assessments is:

  • Evidence Based - Testing procedures are based on scientific research are are therefore defensible, reliable and valid.
  • Objective.
  • Safe - The highest priority is the safety of the client.

Our functional testing protocol is unique in that it includes a full physiotherapy assessment.  This will ensure that the client's pathology is fully assessed at the time of testing and not reliant soley on previous findings.

Our testing is also computerized which decreases subjectivity during the testing process.

Results of this testing can be applied in a number of ways:

  • Assist in return to work planning.
  • Assist in determining the need for further rehabilitation.
  • Assist in litigation.
